Students in IMC

The three years of middle school are a time of accelerated growth opportunities, challenge and adventure for students. We are honored to inspire your child(ren) during this special time in their lives. Harding’s primary goal is to partner with families for the success of every student, academically, emotionally, and socially. Students develop at different rates and we must honor each of our students and their individuality, while meeting their need to be challenged, motivated and encouraged. We are here to support our students and families and to ensure that we meet the district vision of Every Learner, Future Ready.

Teachers at Harding Middle School teach core academics through rigorous course work. Students receive a broad and thorough knowledge of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Students may also explore the performing arts, visual arts, computer science, engineering technology, wellness and physical education. Within this framework, our elective classes provide a strong focus on both the exploration and essential acquisition of skills needed for high school, college, and career readiness.

Students in sixth through eighth grade have the opportunity to participate in the program for academic and creative talent (PACT) throughout their middle school years. Students in PACT are involved in a number of enrichment activities during the school day and after school hours. Harding’s eighth graders have the opportunity to participate in expanded opportunities by taking classes at the high school level and receive credit for this coursework.

A number of co-curricular activities are available for Harding students. Harding offers eight boys sports and seven girls sports for students in seventh and eighth grade, as well as various extra- curricular activities for students in sixth grade. Our athletic programs compete against other Cedar Rapids metro and Iowa City schools. We also have a number of fine arts programs including show choir, drama, band, and orchestra that offer co-curricular opportunities for students.

Harding Middle School has a parent teacher association (PTA) that meets monthly with an agenda that includes a guest speaker, a team spotlight, and discussion of other school-related business. They also work to support the school through various fundraisers, organization of volunteers, and scholarships.

Harding has been recognized for the quality of the programs offered. In 1989, Harding was selected for the First in the Nation in Education Award, which recognizes exemplary schools and programs. In 2019, Harding received the designation of a High Reliability School, the first middle school in Cedar Rapids to do so. We are Charger Proud!
